Electrical Rough-In Cost for a Cabin: What to Budget

Electrical Rough-In Cost for a Cabin: What to Budget

Electrical rough-in is the phase where your cabin's wiring infrastructure gets installed inside the open wall, floor, and ceiling cavities β€” before insulation and drywall close everything up. It's one of the most commonly underestimated line items in a cabin build budget. Here's what it actually costs and what drives the price.

Average Electrical Rough-In Cost

Electrical rough-in typically runs $3 to $5 per square foot of conditioned space for a standard residential installation. For typical cabin sizes:

Cabin Plan Square Footage Estimated Rough-In Cost
Tiny A-Frame / Small Cabin Loft 160 – 320 SF $800 – $2,000
Adirondack, Lean Cottage 500 – 800 SF $1,500 – $4,000
Alpine Cabin, Long Creek 1,000 – 1,400 SF $3,000 – $7,000
Modern Farmhouse, Modern House 1,500 – 2,500 SF $4,500 – $12,500

These figures cover rough-in labor and materials only. The service panel, fixtures, outlets, switches, and final device installation are separate costs typically done at the finish stage.

What's Included in Electrical Rough-In

  • Service panel installation β€” the main breaker panel is typically set during rough-in, sized for the cabin's electrical load
  • Circuit layout and wiring β€” running cable from the panel to every outlet, switch, fixture, and appliance location
  • Box mounting β€” outlet, switch, and fixture boxes are nailed to framing at required heights
  • Dedicated circuit wiring β€” high-draw appliances (range, dryer, HVAC, EV charger) require their own dedicated circuits

What Drives Cost Up

Panel size. A 100-amp panel is standard for small cabins. A 200-amp panel β€” appropriate for larger cabins with electric heat, a well pump, or an EV charger β€” costs $500 to $1,500 more.

Vaulted ceilings and lofts. Running wire through vaulted ceiling cavities and up to loft spaces takes more time than standard 8-foot wall runs. Most cabin designs feature exactly these conditions β€” budget accordingly.

Remote locations. Electricians in rural areas may charge travel time on top of their hourly rate.

Off-Grid Electrical: A Different Calculation

For off-grid cabin builds, the rough-in cost is similar but power comes from a solar array and battery bank. Our off-grid cabin guide covers power system sizing in detail.

Bottom Line

Budget $3 to $5 per square foot for electrical rough-in. For most cabin builds in our catalog, that means $1,500 to $7,000 for a complete rough-in β€” a predictable line item when you plan for it from the start.
